The Great Escape (Article eco 6/2009)
Occupant surveys help us to understand why people in buildings can be desperate to escape. They show us that people often say similar things and that these are normally phrased negatively. This leads to a disharmony between the language of users and that of designers, leading to confusion. For example, aesthetics are lower down in the user's list of priorities than designers expect. If HVAC designers better understand the reactions of users, they can better design systems, which result in buildings that are more acceptable to the user. Further details and explanations are given in this article.
